First firing is the so called bisque firing where temperature goes as high as 1000C degrees. After that our buttons are ready to be glazed. We put 2 layers of glaze manually and when they've dried, buttons are fired for the second time at about 1210C-1240C degrees depending on the glaze choice. We would always go for handwash to provide extra care. However smaller buttons can also be washed in a machine, provided you chose wool or handwash program and the garment is turned inside out and put in a laundry bag. The buttons are not afraid of water or temperature, its all about continuous strokes against the washing machine drum when spinning.
